Stop dealer offers for a vehicle you sold

Contact the dealer named on the offer and say you sold the vehicle. Ask it to stop promotions tied to that car. Make, model and year usually identify the car well enough. Do not attach a title, bill of sale or full VIN unless the dealer explains why its process needs it.

Point to the record, not the paperwork

Note the sender's name and how the mailer describes the car, such as make, model or year.
Contact the dealer through its own website or a contact you used before. State that you sold the vehicle and no longer own it.
Ask it to stop offers tied to that car. Say whether you want any other mail from the dealer, for example offers for a car you own now.
If the dealer asks for more identifying detail, ask what it needs and why before you share more than the make and model.
Record the date and dealer name.

A mailing list is not the title record

Updating a dealer's promotional record does not change who is listed on a title, and a marketing request is the wrong place to handle ownership. If you still need to report the sale, use your state motor vehicle agency's own process.

Other offers about the same car may come from companies that are not the dealer, such as sellers of service plans. A vehicle reference or logo does not show where a sender got your address. Send your request to the company named on each piece.

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

I sold my [year, make, model] on or about [month and year] and no longer own it. Please stop printed trade-in, upgrade and other offers tied to that vehicle for [name as printed] at [mailing address]. [I would / would not] like to keep receiving other mail from you. Please confirm what your marketing record will show.

Match the next offer to its sender

When another offer for the sold car arrives, compare the sender with the dealer you contacted. If they match, write back with the date of your first request. If the sender is a different company, use the sample request below with that company's name.
