Update a DROP profile after contact details change

CalPrivacy says you can edit your DROP request by choosing Check DROP status and opening your profile. Use that route to add a changed name or contact detail. Make changes only in the official service, and keep your DROP ID private.

Record the change, then update it officially

  1. In a private note, identify the detail that changed, such as your name, ZIP code, email address or phone number. Record the old and new forms.
  2. Open Check DROP status from CalPrivacy's official page, access your profile, and review the fields shown. Add the updated information using the service's instructions.
  3. Keep your DROP ID and identity documents out of email and messages to senders or brokers.
  4. After the update, read each broker's status again on the official service. Choose a recheck date, since processing repeats at least every 45 days.

Mail under the old name

DROP sends requests to participating registered data brokers. A store or charity may keep its own first-party record, which a DROP update does not correct. A catalog with your old name shows the name used for that piece, but it may have been prepared before a later record change. Ask the sender which record or campaign produced it rather than treating the label as proof that no update occurred.

Contact-detail change checklist

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Detail changed: [name / ZIP code / email / phone] Old form: [old] New form: [new] Official DROP instructions followed: [yes/no, date] Senders still using the old form: [list] Direct request sent: [sender, date] Reply: [text] Do not write your DROP ID in this checklist.

Send senders both forms of the name

Collect the mailers that still use the old name. Write to each named sender with a postal preference request. List both the old and new name and the address as printed, so the sender can find the record. Log the DROP update separately from these sender requests.

Choose the route that matches the mailing

Use the official route described in this guide for this kind of mail. For a separate ordinary advertisement, Junk Mail Magic can help prepare a sender-specific removal request.
