Handle an opt-out form that asks for an account

A sender that asks you to create an account before removing your address puts you in an awkward spot, because registering can mean handing over more personal information. Check for another route first.

Steps to take before creating an account

  1. Look for a "contact us" or "customer service" link on the same site. Some senders publish a phone number or email address for opt-out requests that does not require a login.
  2. Check the privacy policy for a postal opt-out section. It may give a mailing address where you can send a written request with your label details.
  3. Search the site for terms like "do not mail," "suppress my address," or "remove my name." Those pages sometimes exist apart from the account-gated form.
  4. If you use Junk Mail Magic, photograph the unwanted advertisement and let the service identify the sender and prepare the request. Review the details, sign in, and submit.

If the account is the only route

Read what the account would be used for before creating it. If you choose to register, use an email address you can access and review the marketing options separately from the postal removal request. Save the request confirmation. If you do not want an account, ask the sender whether it accepts the same request by another channel.

Save proof before you leave the page

Whatever route you use, note the date and the sender's name, and keep any confirmation email. You may want that record if mail keeps arriving.

Have an unwanted advertisement ready?

Photograph one piece you are authorized to handle, with the sender and full mailing label visible. Review the details before submitting. The first request is free; the sender controls the response.
