Ask a helper to sort by sender without reading contents

Yes. A helper can sort by the sender name on the outside of each envelope without opening anything. Write a short permission card that names the task, lists what they may see and leaves the decision to open any piece with you.

Write the permission card

  1. Describe the task in one sentence, such as sort by sender name into three piles. Add the helper's name and the date.
  2. List what the helper may see: the outside of the envelope, the return address and the sender name.
  3. List what stays private: everything inside envelopes, any pile you mark as yours, and any piece the helper is unsure about.
  4. Add a line saying you can change or end this permission at any time, then sign or initial the card.

When the outside is unclear

Stores, catalogs and charities often print their names on the front. If a piece has no clear sender, the helper puts it in the ask-me pile without opening it to check. If you use Informed Delivery, the previews of eligible incoming mail can be reviewed together, but you decide whether the helper sees them.

Helper permission card

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Helper: [name] Task: sort my mail into piles by the sender name printed on the outside. You may see: outside of envelopes and return addresses. You may not: open envelopes unless I ask you to. Piles: keep / advertising to stop / ask me I can change or end this at any time. Date: [date] Initials: [initials]

Adjust after the first sort

After the first session, check two things: whether the helper stayed within the card, and which line raised a question. Reword that line. Then decide whether you will request removal from the advertising senders yourself or work through those requests together.
