Handle estate-related advertising after a home is sold

Keep the roles separate after an estate’s home is sold. A new resident can tell an advertiser that the named former occupant no longer lives at the address, without claiming to represent that person. Estate correspondence and formal forwarding belong with the authorized estate contact and USPS.

Split the pile by who acts

  1. Decide which role you hold: new resident or someone authorized for the estate. Unless you're authorized, don't open items addressed to the former owner.
  2. Set aside pieces that are clearly advertising, such as catalogs, coupon packs and sales postcards. Log the sender and the exact name and address on each label.
  3. Pass any possible legal, financial or account item, unopened, to the authorized estate contact. Don't decide on your own that it's junk.
  4. For a clear advertisement, tell the sender that the named person no longer resides there and ask about removing that address from the promotional record. Do not claim to be the addressee or supply estate documents unless you hold the relevant authority.

Where the new resident's role ends

A label visible on an unopened piece can help identify a sender, but it does not authorize the new resident to open or manage the former occupant’s affairs. Keep uncertain mail intact and use the agreed delivery or forwarding route.

An executor or administrator arranging deceased-person forwarding to another address follows USPS’s official process and supplies proof of appointment. A request about an advertiser’s address record does not perform that task.

Hand-off and sender log

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Sender: [name] Name on label: [name as printed] Address: [address] Type: [advertising / possible estate item] If advertising, route used: [website / phone / mail] Date asked: [date] If estate item: handed to [authorized person] on [date]

Agree on a hand-off

If an estate contact has arranged a handoff, confirm how unopened correspondence should reach them. Otherwise ask USPS how to handle mail for the former occupant. Keep any advertiser correction limited to the address record you reported.
