Review a mailed free-gift offer before responding
A mailed free-gift offer can carry costs in its conditions, such as shipping charges, a required purchase, or automatic enrollment. Read what is required before you reply.
How to review a free-gift offer from a mailer
- Find the full terms on the mailer or any insert. Look for required purchases, handling fees, and whether a credit card is needed to claim the gift.
- Look for auto-renewal or subscription language that starts a recurring charge after a trial. It is often in smaller print away from the headline.
- Search for the company independently before you give payment or personal information, and check that its own website describes the same offer.
- If you do not want more promotional mail from the sender, photograph one mailer for Junk Mail Magic, review the details, and submit a removal request. This is separate from canceling any subscription you already have.
What free sometimes requires
Read the offer for purchase, shipping, subscription or attendance conditions before responding. Decide whether you want the offer on those terms, independently of whether you want future paper advertising. For a postal removal request, identify the sender from the complete mailing and keep payment or account documents out of the photo.
Decide after reading the conditions
Write down every condition attached to the gift, including any ongoing charges, and decide whether you accept them before you share contact or payment details.
