Verify a debt letter before calling it junk mail
Do not treat a letter about money owed as junk mail until you have checked it. According to the CFPB, a legitimate collector can identify its company and give information about the claimed debt, so ask for both before you share any personal financial details. A marketing removal request is the wrong tool for this letter and will not answer the question it raises.
Check the claim before you act on it
- Keep the letter and its envelope. Note who says it is collecting, who it says is owed, the amount and any response date.
- Do not call a number or open a link printed on the letter yet. Find the company's contact details on your own, then ask it to identify itself and give information about the claimed debt.
- Hold back account numbers, your Social Security number and bank details until the company has identified itself and the debt information matches something you can check.
- Compare what they tell you with your own records. Write down who you spoke to and what they said they would send.
- If the letter looks like a scam or mail fraud, you can report it to the Postal Inspection Service. Keep the letter and envelope either way.
Why an opt-out request does not belong here
A collection letter concerns a claimed obligation. It is not an advertisement. A request to stop marketing mail is a different request and does not pause any date the letter gives. Treat that date as real until you have confirmed otherwise.
A letter can look like an ad and still be a real collection notice. Another can look official and turn out to be a scam. A name, a logo or an urgent tone will not tell you which.
