Stop contractor mail after an estimate you declined

Give the contractor the date of the estimate and ask it to stop mailing sales follow-up. Say that you are ending promotions only, so the request is not mistaken for a change to a job or agreement.

Keep the request about mail

  1. Find the estimate date, even an approximate one, and the type of job it covered.
  2. Check whether you signed anything with this contractor. If you did, deal with it through the contact on that agreement and keep it out of this request.
  3. Contact the company through its official website or the contact on your estimate paperwork.
  4. Say that you declined the estimate and ask the company to stop mailing sales follow-up to your address. State that you are not asking about any signed work.
  5. Write down the date you sent the request and the route you used.

Keep marketing separate from any agreement

Questions about a signed agreement, deposit or warranty go through the contact named in that paperwork. Leave them out of the advertising request.

A mailer that arrives after an estimate does not show how the company got your address or what it does with it. Describe the pieces you are getting, such as seasonal postcards or discount flyers, so the company can find the right mailings. If a piece looks like an official property notice or includes a check-like insert, the FTC warns that such mail may be advertising for an unrelated home service contract. Verify it through a contact you already trust.

Example estimate follow-up request

Example for your own use. Replace the bracketed details and review what you share.

Hello [contractor name]. You gave me an estimate on [approximate date] for [type of job], which I declined. Please stop mailing sales follow-up to [name as printed] at [mailing address]. This request is about advertising only and does not concern any signed work. Please confirm what you changed.

Decide what a repeat piece means

Keep any reply that states the contractor’s processing period. If another promotion arrives after that period, quote the earlier request and new arrival date and ask which campaign produced it. If no timing was given, ask before deciding whether the repeat means the preference was missed.
